But it doesn’t have to be

The world of tabletop RPGs is an ever expanding, diverse, and creative space that gives anyone with a creative, or process driven brain an opportunity to explore.

It is an industry and creative medium that is technically easy to break into, considering you could build a very successful RPG with 1 piece of paper, and a pencil. But for some, and certainly for me, it can feel daunting, difficult, and like a mountain to climb to get your game made, to a high standard, and put it out there for all to see. There’s plenty of experienced people out there writing about how to do it, certainly.

What it’s missing though, I feel, is someone new at it. Someone detailing their process to make the anxious entry for many GMs a little easier, while they teeter on the edge of changing from creating D&D homebrews to fully fledged mechanics, and the worlds, character sheets, and monster statistics that could come with it.

A smattering of resources exist from well established publishers (Monte Cook’s blog is a perfect example, along with a smattering of other resource heavy sites) but significantly less talks about the journey of a couple of mates just, making something they think is cool and trying to get it out there.

So, join me on the journey of creation, as my friends and I develop an RPG from scratch. I hope to be publishing a couple of things here. Along with development diaries of actual game details, I want to talk about the process. How to create, the challenges and how I have tried to overcome them, and how you can build the confidence to create something for this hobby that we all love so much.
